Holcman A. | Pohar J. | Locniskar F.
On the basis of a trial, it was established that the selection of chickens for greater weight, at the age of 8 days, caused greater fattiness of the animals, larger surface of pectoral muscles (Musculus pectoralis superficialis - m.p.s., M. pectoralis profundus - m.p.p.), more muscle fibres in the m.p.s., but less fibres per mm2 of the muscle, and thicker fibres in case of selection for lower weight. Cocks are heavier, but contain less fat than hens, have larger pectoral muscle surfaces and a greater number of fibres per mm2 in the muscle m.p.s., and thinner fibres.
