It appeared that meteorological factors had the least direct modifying effect on pigment content in after ripening. In the same time trends in mean temperature affected inner value indices in every case. The effect of climatic factors varied from year to year. In years dryer and warmer than usual, the increase in precipitation and air humidity decreased the raw pigment content, the increase in evaporation, however, increased pigment content at harvest. In the same cases air humidity decreased and evaporation increased solids contents at harvest. In years approaching average or in rainy years, the effect of these factors was inverse on the two inner value indices. Under the climatic conditions of Hungary the quantity of precipitation is the main limiting factor. It is, in the same time, the only factor which can be influenced directly in quantity and effect. In order to optimize irrigation it is advisable to make and apply a computer model which, by means of daily mean meteorological data of the day and several years, would indicate trends in weather conditions.
