Expected demand for sheep produces calls for essential growth rates. Starting from demand figures as anticipated for the year 2005, when domestic consumption together with estimated exports may sum-up to more than 40 thousand metric tons, an evaluation of needed growth amounts to 3.4 per year based on figures for 1993. It shall be emphasized that a greater share of live animals is required for a successful come-back to the world market. A slow-down in sheep growing would result in shortages at the domestic market, or in disapearance of Yugoslavia as an exporting country of any significance. Wool imports can not be stopped for the time being, but by gradual improvements in quality, and increases in yields, a reduction in importations would be possible. All these goals call for a well conceived development policy, as well as for a defined level of stimulating means, in order to induce significantly accelerated advances in Yugoslav mountainous areas.
