Pasture management and utilization systems - (Moblissa State Ranch): A workshop report.
1982
Semple S.
Existing production systems are described. Grasses such as Brachiaria and legumes such as Calopogonium are identified. The cattle stock is predominently Holstein with some Zebu and Jersey blood. There is no forage conservation practised. There is also a good herd health programme. Calves are reared artificially, male and female weaners are reared on pastures with limited supplementation. Lactating cows are divided into high and low producers. The fertilizer programme uses a compound fertilizer (15.15.15) at a rate of 100 kg yr**-1. Topping of only the improved pastures is done periodically. Existing problems are identified for calf, heifer and cow rearing, pasture, pasture management and pasture utilization and alternative systems are recommended. Details of alternatives to be tested are given in the areas of field work (calf rearing systems, pasture management systems for heifers and cows and forage conservation), digestion and metabolism work of conserved forages, plot work (weed control methods) and monitoring studies of a state farm and a small privately owned farm.
