The distribution and number of the giant panda in Foping, Shaanxi [China].

The natural distribution and number of the giant panda in the National Foping Natural Reserve, Shaanxi Province were investigated from November to December, 1990. Using the method of route investigation and mathematic model could calculate the giant panda's number. The results showed that there were about 64 pandas in the area of 293 km 2 of reservation and the density was 0.22/km 2. Comparison to the surveying in 1974, 1983 and 1988, indicated that the Foping giant panda population had maintained relatively stable. Most panda appeared in the reservation relatively stable. Most panda appeared in the reservation where the people's activities were least and the bamboo grows well.
