The objective of this experiment was to study ration digestibility and rumen fermentation in sheep fed diets of grass silages alone or in combination with concentrates. The silages were made from Poa pratensis ssp.alpigena (cv.'Holt') and Phleum pratense (cv.'Bodin'). The coefficients of digestibility did not show any marked differences between species. When concentrates were added to Poa and Phleum, an increased digestibility of all nutrients except crude fibre was found. A greater decrease in pH in rumen liquor was found after feeding Phleum rations than with Poa rations. Generally rumen pH was higher in sheep fed Poa silage. Sheep fed Phleum ration had a higher content of total VFA in rumen liquor at all sampling times. The average NGR value for the animals fed Poa plus concentrates was 4.09, while the corresponding value for those fed Phleum plus concentrates was 3.38 indicating Phleum plus concentrates as a more balanced ration for milk production.
