Yendt E.R. | Cohanim M.
This chapter reviews a decade of publications on the topic of urolithiasis, illustrating the uncertainty concerning the role of pyridoxine in preventing calcium oxalate stones. Topics discussed include: vitamin B-6 status in idiopathic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis; response to pyridoxine in idiopathic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis; and causes of hyperoxaluria in stone patients. The authors present data from a study designed to: 1) determine the incidence of hyperoxaluria in idiopathic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis, 2) investigate the cause of the hyperoxaluria and 3) determine ways and means of correcting the hyperoxaluria. One hundred and twenty-four male patients were subjects in the study. Preliminary results suggest that intermittent mild hyperoxaluria with glycolic aciduria may respond to restriction of dietary animal protein.
