Changes in lentil production technology in Syria: A comparative study [Lens culinaris].
1990
Mazid A.
Two surveys were conducted over a 10-year interval to describe the current lentil production practices in Syria and the developments in lentil production since the 1978/79 season. There has been a positive trend in production and area at the national level. It was found that the average seed rate has increased, that there are differences in the number of cultivations, and that there is a tendency among farmers to plant lentil later. The costs of manual harvesting are still very high; new technology for harvesting would solve many of the problems associated with lentil production. The average rate of fertilizer applied has increased by more than 127 for phosphate and 41 for nitrogen. This is due mainly to the decline in the relative price of fertilizer to lentil and to the rapid rate of fertilizer adoption. There has been a sharp increase in production costs in monetary terms, but it was found that the relative production costs of lentil per hectare declined from 1218 kg of lentil in the 1978/79 season to 667 kg of lentil in the 1988/89 season.
