Present status of small pelagic fisheries in the Philippines.

A review is presented of the contemporary status of Philippine small pelagic fisheries. Philippine small pelagic catches have remained steady since the early 1970s at around 500, 000 t/year with about equal contributions from the commercial and municipal sectors. Based on 1986 prices, the total value of the small pelagic catch is 7 billion pesos (US$343 million) or 20% of the total value of all fish landings in the country. Virtually all small pelagic landings are absorbed by the Philippine markets and exports are negligible. Based on sample and survey data, an estimated P7.6 billion (US$373 million) is currently invested in fishing for small pelagics by both the commercial and municipal sectors. Fishing effort has increased exponentially up to the early 1980s, strongly suggesting fisheries is 544,000 t/year at about half of the present level of fishing effort. The maximum economic yield above costs was estimated to be 500,000 t at a fishing effort 35% of the present effort level. Biological evidence for overfishing is also presented.
