Some soil samples from the surroundings of the Bor mines (Yugoslavia) have been analyzed to check the existence of nitrogen-fixing microorganisms. The effect of moisture, pH-values (calcination), addition of NPK fertilizers, manure and the possibility of survival for Azotobacter culture added in the polluted soils have been investigated. At the locality with no human intervention there was no vegetation, and only oligonitrophilic microorganisms were present. At the locality where calcination was carried out and NPK added, the development of vegetation was limited, the number of oligonitrophilic organisms remarkably increased and Clostridium sp. occurred. At the locality where calcination was carried out and manure added, the maize culture developed normally, the presence of nitrogen-fixator was notably the greatest. The presence of oligonitrophilic organisms was very great, Clostridium sp. and Azotobacter sp. were present, but the latter being fewer in number. The investigated soils were not toxic for Azotobacter sp. There was no antagonistic relation between Azotobacter sp. and sulphur (in the ground).
