ITALIANO: L'aspetto del legno e dovuto pricipalmente alla sua struttura anatomica. Nel presente lavoro la struttura anatomica, visibile ad occhio nudo, viene messa in evidenza mediante fotografie a colori, eseguite per trasparenza su sottili sezioni di 14 legni europei. Le sezioni fotografate sono sottilissime (0,3 mm), ricavate nelle tre principali direzioni anatomiche, e provengono da una rara raccolta austro-ungarica, realizzata nel 1882. Per 31 specie vengono inoltre riportati in 6 lingue (tedesco, francese, inglese, ungherese, ceco, polacco) i nomi comuni ed il nome scientifico allora in uso. Per le 14 specie illustrate vengono brevemente riportate le principali caratteristche e gli impieghi.
Show more [+] Less [-]English. The appearance of wood is greatly influenced by its anatomy. Colour photographs are published, and show 14 European woods as observed with the naked eye. Photographs have been taken on 0.3 mm thick veneers sliced in the three main anatomical directions, lighted in transparency to make the wood structure more evident. The veneers belong to a rare Austro-Hungarian set of samples, published in 1882. A table summarizes the scientific and common names that were used at that time for 31 wood species from the same set, in six languages: German, French, English, Hungarian, Czech, Polish. The main features and uses are also briefly described, for the 14 illustrated woods.
