Bee bread was sampled in areas with an increased emission load on environment (Central Spis, Ruzomberok, Bratislava (Slovakia)) and in a region with a relatively low level of environment contamination (Bardejov). The samples were taken from 4-6 sites in each area in 1994 and 1995 at one month intervals (during the last week of May, June, July and August), from the same colony on a permanent site in the given locality and area. After the sample was removed (the comb with pollen) a clean comb was inserted into the brood-chamber of the hive. The bees then deposited pollen into it until the next sampling. After the initial processing of samples the concentration of lead was determined by atomic spectrophotometry. The content of lead ranged from 0.12 to 3.19 mg per kg bee bread in exposed areas in 1994, depending on the distance of the bee colony site from the road. In 1995 the pollen contained from 0.14 to 1.55 mg per kg lead and the average values were lower than in 1994. This was caused probably by the use of additive-free petrol in transport which decreased the amount of air-pollutants in Slovakia in 1995. The content of lead in pollen in the area of Bardejov was lower (from 0.04 to 0.99 mg per kg).
