Aomori Prefecture is indeed Japan's "Apple Kingdom", producing about half of the entire country's apple crop. However, apple growing has history of over 100 years, and a number of problems have surfaced at the present time, including soil deterioration, tree blight, and aged tree stock. Moreover, the last century of apple growing had consequences on the present distribution and density of orchards. This distribution indicates complex trends like dwarf-tree cultivation, conversion of paddy land to orchards, and orchard abandonment and cutting because of deterioration of tree stock. This research deals with the Tsugaru region, which is Aomori's most important apple producing area. This study is especially focused on the cities and towns which have extensive apple orchard acreage and orchards on inclined fields. This research is intended to clarify the relationship between orchard elevations and the historical process of orchard development. As such, it will provide a basic reference for future project development, improvement and conservation of the agricultural infrastructure.
