Effect of beef liberalization on Japan's beef economies.

Japan's beef liberalization started April, 1991. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of beef liberalization on Japan's beef economies. In order to do this, several governmental and industrial data are collected and analyzed. Several effects of the liberalization on Japan's beef economics are as follows: 1) the price of dairy beef has consistently declined as imported beef has increased because the imported beef price is low when the quality is quite the same, but Wagyu (Japanese black) beef prices have not declined. 2) Baby calf and heifer prices have fallen dramatically, and the income of dairy farmers has decreased. 3) Portions such as shoulder clod, brisket deckle off and bottom round have shown a sharper price decline than strip loin. 4) However, the retail price has not declined as much as for baby calf, heifer, cattle at the fattening stage, carcasses and portions. 5) the reasons for the above are the many beef marketing channels and several marketing stages found in Japan. 6) Marketing and distribution channels should be rationalized and made cost-effective in Japan.
