In the first period of the study, there was a difference in the spread of mastitis in cows on the two cow farms studied, while during the second period of the study, mastitis persisted in 6-8% of the cows on both farms. The conditions of keeping were similar on both of the farms, and were thus discarded as a causative factor for the spread of mastitis caused by S. agalactiae or S. aureus. The cows kept on both farms were of the same breed, and thus the breed was excluded as a condition for susceptibility of the cows to mastitis. It was confirmed that milking affects the onset of mastitis. By decreasing the number of cows per attendant from 80 to 60 led to a reduced number of animals infected with either S. agalactiae or S. aureus.
