Cane quality (Pol % cane) was studied during the first ratoon harvest of 14 sugar cane varieties. The majority of varieties were identified as late ripeners and only var. BT 7169 achieved maximum sucrose content early in the harvest season. Vars. B 63118 and DB 513-62 had relatively high sucrose content throughout the 7-month harvest season. Cane quality during the 1st third of the harvest period could thus be improved if vars. B 63118 and DB 513-62 were introduced and harvested early, the major commercial variety B41227 should ideally only be harvested during the middle and late harvest periods.
