Ammonium sulphate (AMS) was evaluated for its ability to enhance glyphosate activity in purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.). Tubers from purple nutsedge were washed for 48 h in water to eliminate possible inhibitors. The tubers were grown in 40 x 40 cm polyethylene bags (0.018 m3 of capacity). When they reached the 11-13 leaf stage, they were sprayed with glyphosate at 1.92 and 2.88 kg/ha alone and in mixture with AMS (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% w/v) at 200 L/ha. A 12.5 mm simulated rainfall was applied 6 and 12 h after herbicide application. Two check treatments were evaluated: one without glyphosate and the other with glyphosate and no rainfall after application. Parameters related to aerial and underground parts of purple nutsedge plants were evaluated 45 days after treatments application. Aerial fresh weight, dry weight and foliar injury were determined. Underground fresh weight, number of tubers, sprouting capacity and number of potential plants were evaluated. All treatments showed differences with the check which did not receive glyphosate. Rainfall after glyphosate application, reduced its activity. The addition of AMS to glyphosate counteracted the negative effect of the simulated rainfall. Treatments that included 2.0% w/v of AMS were more effective enhancing glyphosate activity, controlling both aerial and underground parts of purple nutsedge. Their effect was comparable to that of the treatments which did not receive rainfall after herbicide application.
