Increasing serum calcium and magnesium concentrations in breast-fed infants: Longitudinal studies of minerals in human milk and in sera of nursing mothers and their infants.

Longitudinal calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and phosphorus (P) concentrations were measured in 18 nursing mothers' milk and in the sera of the mothers and their infants over a 6-month period. It was found that increases occurred in serum Ca and Mg concentrations of both infants and mothers over the study period, in association with a decreasing P content of the breast milk. It is suggested that the rise in serum Ca and Mg in the infants may be partly accounted for by a decrease in dietary phosphorus intake. (wz).
