Effects of sedecamycin and carbadox on the performance of fattening pigs.

Although Carbadox, a synthetic antibacterial quinoxalin compound, has been shown to promote growth in young pigs, the application of this drug is restricted only for controlling swine Toreponema hyodysenteriae for its long residual effect. Recently Sedecamycin, a new macroraydal antibiotic, has been found to possess an anti-T. hyodysenteriae activity and its quite short residual effect. It is interesting to know whether Sedecamycin possesses a growth-promoting property similar with Carbadox. The present work tried to compare the effects of two drugs on the performance of fattening pigs. Seventy fattening pigs having a body weight over 60kg were divided into three groups. The control group (Con. group) was fed a purchased fattening feed. Sedecamycin-medicated group (S group) was given the feed supplemented Sedecamycin 25mg/kg and Carbadox-medicated group (C group) with Carbadox 50mg/kg. The medication in S group was stopped at the time at which the mean body weight reached to 93kg and that of C group was to 84kg, since the application period of drug was limited by the Pharmaceutical Law of Japan. When comparing the daily gain (DG) and the feed conversion rate (FC) among 3 groups during 30 days from the initiation of drug medication, it was found out that S and C groups showed higher DG than Cont. group (p<0.01) and also that the drug-medicated groups improved markedly FC (p<0.01), although there could not be found any statistical differences of DG and FC between S and C groups. At the present work, the fattening performance of 3 groups from 120 days old to slaughter was observed. There was no difference in DG among 3 groups, but FC of S group decreased significantly (p<0.01) compared with other two groups.
