Growth, moult, reproduction and filtering rate of an estuarine cladoceran, Diaphanosoma celebensis, in laboratory culture.

The moult frequency, growth, weight-length relationship, brood size and filtering and grazing rates of an estuarine cladoceran, Diaphanosoma celebensis were observed under the experimental condition at about 25c in diluted seawater (15 ppt), providing Tetraselmis chui as food. Only parthenogenetic reproduction by amictic females was observed under the present experimental condition. The intermoult period before maturation was 1 day and the numbers of immature instars were 3-5. The intermoult period after maturation was 2 days. Growth rates in body length and body dry weight of young animals up to 8 days old were relatively high and constant, but those thereafter reduced with a logistic curve reaching the maximum size at 1.27 mm in body length and 16.8 micro-gram in body dry weight. The body dry weight (DW: micro-gram) increased with increase in body length (L: mm): The relationship is expressed by the regression equation DW = 6.76 L(4.03). The mother is the bigger, the brood size is the larger ranging 2 to 12 individuals. The filtering and grazing rates on individual basis increased with increase of body length, while the rates per unit weight decreased.
