Photosynthesis among cultivated and wild genotypes within ploidy levels in wheat. Short communication.

In general, the wild genotypes within a ploidy level had higher rate of photosynthesis than cultivable forms. On the other hand, the leaf area and harvest index were higher in cultivable forms. The higher rate of photosynthesis in wild types was associated with low stomatal diffusive resistance. Wild forms of tetraploid and hexaploid species had profuse tillering compared to domesticated forms. There was enough sink requirement at this stage to commensurate with high rate of photosynthesis of these wild genotypes. The increase in yield in domesticated forms could have been derived either from reduction in wastage of whole plant assimilates or increased efficiency of translocation to the grain.
