Simulation of field soil moisture condition under corn as affected by planting date.

Under bare conditions, the model estimated satisfactorily the moisture content of the 0-15 and 0-30 cm soil depths except that it tended to underestimate moisture content of the 0-15 cm soil depth during periods with scanty rainfall. Under cropped conditions, it satisfactorily estimated moisture content of the 0-15 cm soil depth during the second up to the fifth planting corn. For the 0-30 cm soil depth, reasonable predictions were obtained only for the first and second planting of corn. Extending the simulation depths to 45 and 60 cm produced significant overestimates. The date of planting significantly affected corn performance. Corn first planted on the last week of April and those planted three and five weeks later gave higher stover and ear yields as compared to those planted seven and nine weeks later. The better performance of corn in the former treatments was attributed to favorable soil moisture and weather conditions. On the other hand, the poor yield performance in the latter treatments was a result of very wet soil moisture condition during the early growth stages which severely affected crop establishment and consequently the yield performance. Both favorable and unfavorable soil moisture conditions associated with each planting date were predicted satisfactorily by the model.
