The paper analyses the latest years of drought in Hungary, based on the aridity index by Palfai. In addition to the general trend, within-year aridity plays also an important role in limiting proper functioning of the trees. The study of the effect of drought on growth and growth loss is based on the growth pattern of trees in the vegetation period. Drought also caused that the area of unsuccessful reforestations and afforestations increased. Some possibilities of offsetting the adverse effects of drought are also reported.
