Integrated approach to control of insect pests of stored rice in Malaysia.

Considerable portions of our foodgrains are lost through insect pest infestation both in terms of quantity and quality. The major pests such as Sitophilus spp., Tribolium castaneum, Oryzaephilus surinamensis and Corcyra cephalonica infesting stored rice in warehouses are discussed. The present control practices which rely heavily on the use of pesticides are reviewed with reference to a variety of potential methods available. Physical control measures are also adopted under certain storage conditions. An integrated approach to control all the pest species present which will optimize the efficiency of pest management within the constraints of availability and practicability of the component control procedures are highlighted. The integrated control strategy is based on (i) a high standard of hygiene and sanitation, (ii) minimum use of insecticides and (iii) use of methods that obtain as complete a kill as practical. The importance of hygiene and good house-keeping as a platform for integration of other supplementary control methods is emphasized. The paper also stresses the need for components of pest management strategies which are presently lacking in our storage pest control system. For a successful integrated pest management (IPM) system, there must be an integrated effort involving all members within the grain handling authority including all sectors of storage such as those at cooperatives and port terminals, and private traders and millers. Proper procedures on safe handling and storage of grains should be strictly followed from harvest through to final grain consumption.
