A report of detailed studies performed in July 1986 to understand the ecological aspects of the occurrence of Diospyros celebica and Kalappia celebica at Buyu (mount) Coi and Buyu Kaosooga in Wotu District, South Sulawesi. The climate of the study site belong to the rainfall type A of the Schmidt-Ferguson classification, having a Q value of 4.9 and an annual rainfall of 2601 mm, situated at an elevation between 270 m and 540 m above sea level. The study was made by observation of 10 sub-plots each measuring 20 x 20 m in D. celebica forest and 10 similar other sub-plots in K. celebica. Two kinds of smaller sub-plots were plotted, one with a total area of 0.04 ha and the other 0.02 ha take record of the sapling and seedling developmental stages. A comparison was made of the soil properties and species composition of both forest types. The fertility of the soil was evaluated on the bases of chemical analyses of the topsoil, which proved that the soils were deficient of nutrients and very acid with a pH ranging from 3.7 and 3.8 in D. celebica, while in K. celebica forest between 3.9 and 4.0. The number of individuals of each developmental stage (tree, sapling, and seedling) was more frequent in K. celebica forest. It was affirmed by the similarity index of Jaccard that the developmental stage assemblages were quite different. The differences were very strong particularly in D. celebica forest. The differences between both forest types as shown by the average similarity index was less than 30 percent. The regeneration process in D. celebica forest proceeded much more amply than that in K. celebica. The existence of certain dominant or co-dominant species of each forest type could probably be used to judge the suitability of the site for the establishment of D. celebica or K. celebica plantations.
