Transmission of the agents of maize streak and striate diseases by leafhopper vectors in Egypt.

In the present work transmission of maize streak and striate diseases agents from infected maize plants to healthy celery from infected celery plants to healthy ones and retransmission of these agents from infected celery to maize plants by the potential leafhopper vectors which are abundant on maize cultivations were investigated. The results obtained showed that Cicadulina china (Ghauri) and C. bipunctella zeae (china) are important vectors of the virus of maize striate disease, C. bipunctella zeae and Balclutha hortensis (Lindb.) play an effective role in spreading the virus of maize streak disease in maize cultivations in newly reclaimed sandy areas of Salhia district, Egypt. It was shown that C. bipunctella zeae and B. hortensis acquired and transmitted the virus of maize streak disease in the nymphal and adult stages. The acquistion threshold feeding period was 7 to 10 days (for adults) and 6 to 9 days (for nymphs). The latent period was 6 to 8 days. The inoculation threshold feeding period was 5 to 8 days. Adults remained infective as long as they live (7-8 weeks).
