Feeding native chickens with single feedstuffs compared to farm-mixed and commercial mash [Philippines]. Study 2.

Egg production was higher in the birds fed commercial mash and farm-mixed formulations than those given the single feedstuff of coconut, palay or corn in either the period when not allowed to hatch their eggs and when they were allowed to hatch. Average egg weight was not affected by the kind of feed given when the chickens were let loose in the farmstead. Among the single feedstuffs used, corn was better than palay and coconut when allowed to brood on their eggs. Feeding an expensive feed like the commercial layer mash to the Philippine native chickens when raised in the usual barrio system slightly increased the egg production but may not be practical if the cost of feeds was considered. The feeding of available single feedstuff in the barrios for the native chicken can be considered economically satisfactory for the optimum production capacity of these stocks.
