Role of women in Bangladesh agriculture.

This study attempted to identify the effects of various roles of women in Bangladesh agriculture. The analysis was based mainly on a field survey in specific areas of Bangladesh during summer 1985. Like many developing countries, agriculture of Bangladesh absorbed most of the labour force specially women. Women of farming societies performed various agricultural operations at different stages of production, but their role was not significantly recognized. Women's different roles were related to certain personal characteristics and socio-economic variables mainly religion, age of housewife, education, household composition and land holdings. The results obtained indicated that all of these variables were significant in explaining rural women's different role patterns. But education, age and farm size of the respondents were more effective than religion and family size in influencing women's various roles in agriculture. Variables which can control or mobilize different roles of the rural women should be properly addressed so that a viable development plan can be formulated. The results of the study are specially pertinent to the debate about the present position of village women of Bangladesh and also for the future direction of women's productivity research.
