Potential feed substitutes for poultry and swine and its economic viability.

There are a number of studies on nonconventional feeds and feed substitutes. Several of these feeds have shown potential, but the major problem is how to produce them in commercial quantity at a price competitive with the conventional feeds. For energy feeds, cassava and sweet potato meals are the most promising. Cassava meal up to 10% of the diet may be fed to day-old chicks up to 8-weeks with satisfactory performance. Studies showed that substitution of sweet potato meal for corn seemed to be feasible at certain levels. UPLB [University of the Philippines at Los Banos, College, Laguna, Philippines] researches have been working on a variety of possible protein substitutes which include earthworm meal, maggot meal, toad meal, full fat soybean, leaf protein concentrates and single cell protein.
