A technical review examines the role of zinc (Zn) in the transfer of genetic information, with emphasis placed on the role of intrinsic Zn in polymerases and transcription factors and on the effects of Zn deficiency in DNA replication and transcription. Topics include: the role of Zn in DNA replication; the role of Zn in gene transcription; and the role of Zn in Transcription Factor A metalloenzyme in RNA synthesis. It is concluded that Zn plays an essential role in gene expression.(wz).
