Validaci.n de la t.cnica ERS-Scatterometer para estimar la humedad del suelo a partir de mediciones de TDR en el sector semi.rido de la cuenca del Duero (Espa.a).

El objetivo general del presente trabajo es validar el denominado Soil Water Index (SWI), obtenido de la se.al del sat.lite ERS-Scatterometer, a partir de mediciones de campo aplicando la t.cnica TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry). El SWI es un .ndice que permite estimar el contenido de agua para el conjunto del perfil ed.fico considerando el valor de humedad de los primeros 5 cm del suelo. Para ello se ha medido durante 21 meses (desde junio de 1999 hasta febrero de 2001) la humedad del suelo a intervalos quincenales en un conjunto de 20 estaciones de humedad repartidas en una superficie aproximada de 1.300 km cuadrados en el sector semi.rido de la cuenca del Duero (Espa.a). Cada estaci.n consta de 4 sondas TDR insertadas horizontalmente a 5, 25, 50 y 100 cm de profundidad. De manera complementaria, se ha procedido a la medici.n de las principales propiedades f.sicas e h.dricas (textura, contenido de materia org.nica, estimaci.n de la curva de retenci.n h.drica, etc.) en cada uno de los 4 niveles de las estaciones de medici.n de humedad. Los resultados muestran un coeficiente de determinaci.n significativo (R2 = 0,75), con una desviaci.n cuadr.tica media igual a 2,2 % vol. La desviaci.n entre ambas estimaciones puede explicarse por el efecto de la fracci.n textural del suelo sobre su capacidad de retenci.n h.drica. A partir de los resultados obtenidos es posible abordar el estudio de la din.mica espacio-temporal de la humedad del suelo a escala regional en zonas similares a la utilizada para la validaci.n.

The general aim of the present work was to validate the so-called Soil Water Index (SWI), obtained from the signal from the ERS-Scatterometer satellite from field measurements by applying the TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) technique. The SWI is an index that permits the estimation of the soil water content for the whole of the soil profile from the soil moisture value obtained in the first 5 cm of soil. To do so, we measured soil moisture at fortnightly intervals over 21 months (from June 1999 to February 2001) at 20 soil moisture stations distributed over an area of approximately 1300 square km in the semi-arid sector of the Duero Basin (Spain). Each station has four TDR probes inserted horizontally at depths of 5, 25, 50 and 100 cm. At the same time, we measured the main physical and hydrological properties (texture, organic matter content, soil water retention curve, etc) at each of the four probe levels of the soil moisture stations. The results revealed a significant coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.75), with a mean quadratic deviation of 2.2 % vol. The deviation between both estimations can be accounted for in terms of the effect of the textural fraction of the soil on its water retention capacity. From the results obtained it is possible to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of soil moisture at regional scale in zones similar to the one used for the validation.
