Samples of contents from 46 red deer stomachs from Polana, 59 of red deer and 56 of roe deer from Sitno were collected in 1991 and 1992. The samples were unwashed and processed according to the state standard CSN 46 7093. Fresh samples were analysed for the content of crude protein, fat, ash, fiber, digestible protein, nitrogen-free extract, starch units, P, Ca, K, Na, Mg, and S in % of dry matter and betha-carotene in mg kg** (-1). The year was divided into 4 seasons: 1, December-February, 2, March-May, 3, June-August, and 4, September-November. The data were processed by variance analysis by the SAS statistical package (GLM Procedure). The significant differences were tested by Duncan's test. From among all nutrients, protein, fat, ash, fiber, and macroelements - especially Ca and P - best differentiated the statistical classes. Roe deer consumed food of higher quality than red deer and its quality varied less among the seasons than with red deer. The first class is in the spring when more than half of food spectrum is formed of grass (red deer) or grass and forbs (roe deer), and the food quality grows rapidly. The second class is during red deer rutting season, when nutritional quality of the food of the stags older than four years is poor (except ash and starch) and more variable (except starch).
