A study was done in order to evaluate the effect of trunk girdling on maturity and fruit size, tree productivity and growth in plums cvs Black Beaut and Larryanne, peaches cv. Flamecrest and apricots cv Modesto. Plum and peach trials were done in Malloa (6th region) and the apricots trial in Buin (Metropolitan region). The girdling was done ten days before pit hardening (10 DBPH) and at the beginning of pit hardening (BPH). Trees without girdling were left as control. Crop density was standardized as a function of number of fruits/cm2 of the trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA), ten days after the first girdling was done. Fruit development and maturity and tree growth evaluations were done. In all cultivars, girdling increased the tree productivity, expressed as yield/cm2 TCSA, fruit number/cm2 TCSA and fruit size. Also girdling advanced fruit maturity approximately four days in relation to not-girdled trees, and less than one day was observed between girdled treatments. Girdled trees showed good healing and callus formation 60 days after treatment, and no effects were detected at winter pruning.
