The authors, before examining the possibilities of controlling and conditioning the reproductive activity in mares, review all the characteristics of such activity in equines. Particularly they consider the biochemical, humoral and neuroendocrine implications that characterize the maturation and rupture of the follicle. The authors subjected a group of mares at natural or induced oestrus to i.v. treatment with 3000 I.U. of HCG on the second or third day after first clinical signs of oestrus, and obtained the rupture of follicle 24-30 hours after this practice as well as a high percentage of pregnancies in mated mares.
