Efecto de la maleza chayotillo Sicyos deppei (Cucurbitaceae) de emergencia tardia sobre maiz.

Se estudio el efecto en el rendimiento de maiz y la dificultad para su cosecha (tiempo necesario para efectuarla, TC), de tres densidades de poblacion de la maleza que emergio despues de la segunda escarda del maiz. Las densidades (plantas por m2) fueron: (1) testigo, cero; (2) bajo densidad, BD (1.2); (3) alta densidad, AD (3.7). Sicyos deppei y las otras especies de maleza que emergieron junto con el se dejaron desarrollar hasta el fin del experimento. El crecimiento del chayotillo fue exuberante y trepo hasta la porcion superior del maiz sombreandolo. Las otras especies de maleza crecieron debajo del dosel del maiz. En comparacion con el testigo, el rendimiento del maiz fue 33 menor, y el TC, 64 mayor en AD y tambien mayor (60) en BD. El rastrojo no fue util como forraje debido a las cerdas de la maleza. Estas constituyen una molestia fisica para el hombre y dificultan la cosecha. Los porcentajes de acame fueron: 9, 38 y 100 para el testigo, BD y AD, respectivamente. Por su habito de crecimiento S. deppei compite con el maiz aun despues del periodo critico de competencia determinado para otras malezas. La densidad de poblacion modula el grado de competenci ejercido por chayotillo.

English. Sicyos deppei, chayotillo is a climbing weed common in the high valleys of Mexico. The present work studies the effect on maize yield and the difficulty of harvesting (measured by the time spent for harvest, TH), due to three population densities of the weed which emerged after the second cultivation. The densities (plants per m2) were: (1) control, zero; (2) low density (LD, 1.2); (3)high density (HD, 3.7). Growth of chayotillo was exuberant and the plants climbed over the maize and smothered it. Other non climbing weeds which emerged along with S. deppei developed under the crop canopy. Compared to the control maize yield was 33 percent lower and TH 64 percent longer in the case of HD, and also longer (60) in LD. Due to the weed bristles fodder became useless. The bristles were also a physical nuisance to man, increasing the TH. Percentages of lodging were 9, 38 and 100 for the control, LD and HD respectively. Late populations of the chayotillo that emerged after the critical competition period differ from non climbing weeds because they can compete sucessfully with the crop. Population density modulates the capacity of the weed to compete with the crop.
