Heterosis in some quantitative characters in F1 hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.).
1991

Four IRRI [International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] recommended rice cultivars, a local rice cultivar, Batangas and one line developed by the Philippines were crossed among themselves to obtain the base materials for a breeding program. The parental lines and the F1 hybrids were grown under similar environmental conditions to study the heterosis and heterobeltiosis from some quantitative characters related to yield. In general, all F1 hybrids from the different crosses showed considerable positive heterosis for flag leaf length and panicle length. Varying degrees of positive and negative heterosis were observed in different crosses with regards to plant height, flag leaf breadth, number of spikelets per panicle and percent filled grains. Most crosses showed considerable negative heterosis for a number of productive tillers. Results indicate that the parental materials could be used to developed varieties for rainfed condition.
