Video recordings showed treatment of barley seed with imidacloprid to have no effect on the behaviour of Rhopalosiphum padi in the first 30 min of colonization of the seedlings. Significant mortality of R. padi was not seen until after 48 h and the kill rate with an application quantity of 105 kg imidacloprid active ingredient/100 kg seed was only 90% after 72 h. The reproduction of R. padi was reduced by the treatment, and those aphids that survived tended to leave the plants. Overall, the effects on Sitobion avenae were somewhat weaker than those on R. padi and were often not significant, it can therefore be concluded that the efficacy of the compound against these two species differs. Treatment with imidacloprid reduced the rate of BYDV infection of barley seedlings, but did not prevent transmission of the virus.
