The main objective of this thesis was to determine the effect of two irrigation frequencies, every eight and twelve days, applied on simultaneous experiments, and five nitrogen rates, 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg/ha, on the yellow berry percentage of five durum wheat cultivars (Triticum turgidum var. durum), SNA-3, Ucaro 1, Ucaro 3, Ucaro 4 and Chagual. Other characters evaluated were lodging, mature plant height, yield components, yield, test-weight and protein content. The effect of nitrogen was significant on lodging and mature plant height; both characters increased with higher nitrogen rates. The effect of nitrogen on yield components was also significant under both irrigation frequencies. Number of spikes per hectare and number of kernels per spike increased consistently in response to higher nitrogen rates; 1000-kernel weight was highest with medium rates of nitrogen. Cultivars were statistically different for all three yield components. Increasing the nitrogen level induced higher yields up to 200 kg/ha of this nutrient. Cultivars were significantly different in their yield expression. Nitrogen had no significant effects on the industrial quality characters analyzed. However, protein content and yellow berry percentage showed a tendency towards increase and decrease, respectively, in response to higher nitrogen rates. Under the irrigation frequency of every 12 days, higher yield and protein content, and lower yellow berry percentage were observed, as compared to irrigation every 8 days. Lodging, number of spikes per hectare and 1000-kernel weight were also higher with the reduced irrigation frequency, although the magnitude of the differences was lower than that of the previously mentioned characters. Mature plant height, number of kernels per spike and test-weight, did not respond to irrigation frequencies.
