La politica de acuerdos de libre comercio en Chile.
1994
Vicuna P Ricardo
This paper discusses the Chilean trade policy during the 90's and its departure from an exclusively unilateral tariff reduction approach. Since 1990, Chile started to negotiate free-trade agreements with several regional partners and has been recently invited to be a member of NAFTA and to negotiate its association with MERCOSUR. This work presents the economic rationale behind this "new strategy" and the challenges that it imposes for the future. The paper describes in section 2 the main features of the trade policy applied in Chile since the mid 70's up to present. In section 3, it describes the four geographic areas in which the Chilean trade policy must operate, with special emphasis on NAFTA and MERCOSUR. Section 4 analizes the issue of convergence of the different agreements in which Chile participates. Finally, section 5 presents the main conclusions of the paper.
