The study is bassed on 40 populations grown under uniform conditions in an experimental plot. Forty five cuantificable morfologicala characters were used to construct a dendrogram of phenetic relationships between populations, using the dissimilarity coefficient of the Euclidean Distance in TAXON 300 program, as well as chromosome counts, pollen size, and pollen fertility, Intra and interpopulational artificial cross pollinizastions were not successful enough to produce full data. Four groups of related populations (taxa) were recognized, corresponding to Solanum cardiophyllum Lindl., S. ehrenbergii (Bitt.) Rydb., S. sspolytrichon Rydb., and Solanum sp. The first is dipoid (n=12), the second is composed of both diploid (n=12) and triploid (n=18) populations, and the others are teraploid (n=24). Fertility pollen and size of are correlated with ploid level. The diploids present the highest fertility and smallest pollen; triploids are of interrmediate pollen size with lower fertility; tetraploids have the largest pollen and low to intermediate pollen fertility. Morphologically, S. cardiophyllum in the study area differs notably from the species in the rest of its range in having glandular hairs, a characteristic of S. ehrenbergii. This, plus the occurrence of populations morphologically intermediate between S. ehrenbergii and S. cardiophyllum in other characters, suggests the possibility of interspecific hybridization.
