Sunflower, corn and dry bean were studied under irrigated and drought conditions. Sunflower showed lesser reductions in transpiration under drought and higher water potentials. This species suffered severe losses in leaf area index (LAI) and dry weight but it showed osmotic adjustment, the smallest reduction net assimilation rate (NAR) under drought, the greatest recovering of NAR after drought and the smallest yield reduction. Corn reached the greatest values of diffusion resistance and the greatest reductions in the transpiration under drought. Corn also had a marked asincrony between tesseling and silking, which was partially related to the losses in grain number; its TAN drooped to zero before maturity, and grain weight showed the greatest reduction. In dry bean, the LAI, dry weight, grain number and yield were severely reduced. However, this species showed the best recovery in growth and in pod production when watered after the drought treatment.
