The banana, the fourth more important food plant in the world, is a basic source for 400 million people. The leaf mould Mycosphaerella fijiensis reduces yields by 30 to 50 per cent. The leaves of the infected plants necrose so that photosynthesis is reduced. The selection for resistance is laborious mostly because the banana plant can produce only a few seed per bunch. Moreover, most of these seeds do not germinate. Besides, the classical selection is obstructed because one most involve in the crossing scheme varieties belonging to different ploidy levels to obtain finally, once again, an infertile plant. Thus improvements by means of genetic engineering seems appropriate and the first transgenic banana plants have been obtained.
