Germination of inmature seeds of charlock (Sinapis arvensis L.) was studied by using culturing whole seeds or excised embryos "in vitro", with or without GA subindex 3 (100 mg . l raised to the -1 power). Pods were harvested 14 to 28 days after anthesis and the whole seeds or excised embryos were cultured in a Heller's nutrient medium containing glucose (25 g . l raised to the -1 power) and solidified with agar (100 g . l raised to the -1 power). Germination of whole seeds was 20 to 30 per cent 2 and 3 weeks after anthesis, and declined to 0 per cent at 4 weeks. Germination of excised embryos was 27, 96 and 99 per cent at 2, 3 and 4 weeks, respectively. GA subindex 3 promoted germination of whole seeds at 2 weeks and there after. Inhibition of mature seeds for 24 h or continuous incubation in GA subindex 3 solutions demostrated the presence of seeds with different sensitivities to GA subindex 3. Those with red coats, were generally smaller in size, exhibited a grater response to GA subindex 3.
