The stress of recurrent hypoglycemia in diabetic pregnancy.

A study of 121 diabetic pregnant women assessed the effect of the stress of recurrent acute hypoglycemia on maternal and fetal metabolism in diabetic pregnancy. The results indicate that recurrent stress of this type could potentiate the A-cell function in diabetic mothers, further impairing "facilitated anabolism" and increase "accelerated starvation," both typical of normal pregnancy. Amniotic fluid analysis showed that maternal hypoglycemia correlated with a fetal B-cell hyperfunction, while cord blood analysis showed that a B-cell hyperfunction was present in infants of mothers who had frequent hypoglycemic episodes during gestation.(wz).
