The use of agricultural films in the Third World is critically assessed in this contribution. The author criticizes the lack of participation of the rural population in producing and using most agricultural films made to date. The film thus fails to reach its target group. For agricultural films, to be successful dialogue must be sought with the target group as early as the production stage. This dialogue must be continued while the films shown. In this way, the agricultural film can be used in spite of financial, communication-related and content-related limitations. Agricultural films can be used effectively, for example, to portray local issues, to inform the rural population about new techniques and to generally sensitize the society to the significance of rural areas through television films. These points must be taken into account in any film promotion policy.
