Note
In the region of Yamparaez, one of the important cereal growing areas of the Department of Chuquisaca, a typological study of farmers was conducted with the objective of showing and understanding the diversity among them. The criteria used were the structure and functioning of the farm unit, and an analysis of the present situation allowed the identification of four groups of farmers. Each group has different technical and economic performances depending on their resources and their objectives. The principal differentiation factors are the amount of land to which the farmer has access, the incorporation of livestock in the farming system and the possibilities of achieving food self-sufficiency or profit. Farmers with the least area cannot live solely from their agricultural production and must take full-time employment as well. Those with most land have had at some time, due to the size of their landholding, the possibility of obtaining credit or accumulating capital to dedicate to other businesses and later to provision of services. To these farmers agriculture does not provide their sole income. Farmers who have most land and those who have least contract hand labour and do not practice any livestock production. The farmers of the other two groups have enough land to be able to live from their farming enterprise, at least during the cropping season, complementing their income with other activities. On the other hand these farmers also produce sheep. It is rare to find farmers who can be self-sufficient just by producing crops. Farmers in these groups supplement their income working in the city or by temporary migration to labour markets. The technological alternatives that are proposed for this and similar agricultural areas should, by necessity, take into account the differences between groups of farmers, so that the adoption of new practices are consistent with the farmers' objectives and the characteristics of his farming enterprise.
