On-farm research of legume based cropping patterns was conducted under upland rainfed conditions at Chom Thong Land Reform Area, Chiang Mai Province in the rainy season of 1987. The cropping systems tested were mungbean-soybean, mungbean-sunflower, peanut-mungbean and mungbean-peanut. For mungbean-soybean and peanut-mungbean cropping patterns, the superimposed trials on mungbean varieties were also conducted. The varieties used were KPS 1, KPS 2 and U-Thong 1. Yields obtained from KPS 1 and KPS 2 were satisfactorily high as compared to the yield produced by U-Thong 1 either in the beginning or at the post rainy season. High yield in these particular varieties was mainly due to higher pod number per plant as compared to those produced by U-Thong 1. The mean grain yields obtained from KPS 1 and KPS 2 and U-Thong 1 were 289, 324 and 135 kg/rai in the beginning of rainy season and were 163, 170 and 126 kg/rai in the post rainy season respectively. However, yield of KPS 1 and KPS 2 obtained from post rainy season were lower than the yield achieved when they were grown in the beginning rainy season. This was mainly due to the effect of soil water deficits at later period of the growing season.
