This article which is based on the book "Crop Production and Crop Protection" by Oerke et al. (1994) provides estimates of yield response to crop protection measures and details the extent of the losses themselves. Crops covered include cotton, coffee, potatoes, soybean, rice, wheat, maize, and barley. Information on the value and number of hectares grown, geographical areas of production, effects of plant protection measures, and of pests in terms of yield loss are discussed. The data are put into context by reviewing the relation between population growth, agricultural production, and food supplies and by discussing the changes, developments, and challenges associated with current crop protection methods.
