Seeds of Chinese parasoltree (Firmiana simplex) germinate quite difficultly, even after stratification and often keep dormant until the next spring in nursery. Quick germination of coat-removed seeds of the tree showed that the embryos were ripe and not in dormancy. However, the absorption rate of water for the coated seeds was only the half as for the normally germinating ones, and their respiratory intensity was only one sixth of the latter's. These facts indicated that the permeability of the seed-coat was very poor, which might be the real cause of difficult germination, and that the seeds belonged to the type of seed-coat-dormancy. After corroding the seeds with concentrated sulphuric acid, there were a lot of cracks in the seed coat, and the permeability of the seed-coat was much increased. The germination percentage of the treated seeds reached to 99% during the first 8 days in the laboratory as well as in the nursery, but none of the untreated seeds germinated at the same time.
