Pollution problems of the Baltic Sea.
1984
Zmudzinski L.
Baltic Sea eutrophication process brings about an increase in total biological production, changes in species composition of plankton and benthos as well as an increase of macrobenthic deserts. It was found that the degree of toxicity of DDT is very high, of PCB - high, of oil-derived substances - moderate, and of phospho-gypsum - very low. The rate of self-purification of the Baltic waters is directly proportional to temperature and inversely proportional to an initial concentration of oil substances and to the degree of contamination with municipal sewage. A very high deficiency of oxygen in the Baltic Sea deep waters considerably hampers the process of mineralization in the sea depths.
